Tuition

I’m from a family of teachers and have been brought up listening to people talk about education, about what achievement really is and how to solve your own personal problems through taking advice from others.

Teaching one on one and in small groups allows a much more personal approach to education, there is a lot more that can be achieved, whether it’s working towards a grade, an audition or just overcoming a glitch in technique, discovering a new style or finding out that it’s not as hard as you thought it was in the first place.

My career as a brass teacher started off at music college where a visiting professor took me under his wing and gave me the opportunity to watch and learn from his teaching. From this I picked up all sorts of ways to teach modern technique, lots of tricks brought over from studying in America but most importantly learning how to approach each student individually and create a strategy to work around their specific needs and problems.

Over the last 20 years I have developed that into my own approach and style and have comfortably encouraged students to work at their own pace. I have experience in teaching students for years throughout almost their entire school life to one off lessons with young professionals who are looking for advice on how to develop not only their playing but also find out more about their potential careers. I'm also used to taking on more mature students who have come back to playing as a hobby after several years off because of work or family commitments.

Currently I hold the post of trumpet teacher at St. Alban’s High School for Girls where I’ve been teaching since 2012. Before taking on this post I had worked at several schools in inner city London and Hertfordshire, state and private. Teaching small group and individual lessons alongside private tuition, one to one and roles in education workshops and masterclasses with youth ensembles.

Music can be many things, to me it’s mostly fun. If everybody I teach can enjoy making music half as much as I do, then they’re going to have a great time!
